Difference between sex, sexual orientation, gender indentity and role:

Many times we make a mess when differentiating between sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and role.

In this post we will explain as simple as possible so that we all understand it.

· Sex:Biological and genetic condition by which we are born with male, female or combined primary sexual characters (intersexuality). But it is important to emphasize that our sex doesn’t determine our identity or the orientation of our sexual desires.

· Sexual orientation:Describes the sexual desire and the emotional and affective attraction that a person feels for others. Hence the terms heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and pansexual.

· Gender identity:Refers to a person’s awareness of feeling belonging to the male or female sex. This means that a person can feel a gender identity different from their innate physiological characteristics. For example, a person can feel female even though he was born with the male sex, or he can feel male even if he was born with the female sex.

· Role:It refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a society considers appropriate for men and women. And the role has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

From Secretummm, we hope to have helped a little more in this matter and remember that diversity make us unique!
